In a heartwarming recount of an encounter with Hajiya Dada, a prominent figure of the Yar'Adua family, Isiyaku Dikko, a former editor at Weekly Trust and permanent secretary at MDGs, Katsina State, narrates a personal moment that highlights the humility and familial warmth embodied by the matriarch of the renowned Katsina household.

Dikko recalls being sent to deliver a message to Hajiya Dada at Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua's residence in Katsina. Despite his over 50 years of age at the time, Hajiya Dada affectionately referred to him as “yaro” (meaning "boy"), a term she used for anyone younger than herself. This simple interaction reflects her deep maternal instincts, and Dikko recognized it as a demonstration of her role as a mother figure to all.

After delivering the message, Hajiya Dada inquired about his family background and humorously expressed surprise that he had not visited her often. She said, "Wane gida ka ke a nan garin?" (Which house are you from?) followed by a lighthearted chide, “Shine ba ka zuwa kana gaisheni?" (Why don’t you come and greet me?). Her laughter and request to maintain regular visits to sustain their relationship encapsulated her approach to fostering kinship, even with distant relations.

Dikko notes that this exchange is reflective of broader Hausa societal norms, where elders address younger individuals affectionately, regardless of the latter’s accomplishments. He shares a similar memory with his uncle, underscoring the cultural significance of age-based respect and humor in sustaining bonds across generations.

Moreover, Dikko reflects on the diplomatic qualities exhibited by Hajiya Dada, noting that her serious yet friendly demeanor exemplified her unique ability to convey important messages with warmth and wit.

In a broader context, Dikko emphasizes that the Yar'Adua household was known for its core values of humility, generosity, and diplomacy. He references Dr. Ayuba Abubakar’s biography of Alhaji Maitama Sule, in which Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua’s vital role in maintaining stability within Nigeria's First Republic was acknowledged. His ability to rise above political differences and act as a mediator was crucial during a period of intense political tension.

The enduring legacy of the Yar'Adua family, with Hajiya Dada as a central figure, continues to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her influence, both within her immediate family and the broader Katsina community, remains a testament to her nurturing spirit and commitment to sustaining strong, lasting relationships.

Allah ya jikan yar'uwata, Hajiya Dada – May God bless the soul of Hajiya Dada.
